A delegation of the Almatti-Hunsagi-Yadgir Railway Horata Samiti recently met the Railway Minister in Delhi seeking a new railway line between Almatti and Yadgir.

The team, headed by Chandrasekhar Dandin and Sharanagouda Patil Vajjal, submitted a memorandum to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and and his deputy V. Somanna urging them to implement the Almatti-Yadgir railway line project.

The delegation earlier met Members of Parliament G. Kumar Naik (Raichur) and Ramesh Jigajinagi (Vijayapura) before meeting the two Ministers.

The delegation convinced the Ministers about the need for the new railway line between the two districts of the Kittur and Kalyan Karnataka regions.

“At present, the distance between Vijayapura and Yadgir, via Hotgi, Kalaburagi, and Wadi, is more than 300 km. If the new line, via Almatti, Nidagundi, Muddebihal, Hunsagi, Shorapur, Hattigudur and Wadagera, is laid, the distance will be reduced to 154 km and it will be more convenient for the travelling passengers and also transportation of goods,” Mr. Dandin told the Ministers.

“After hearing the delegation, Mr. Vaishnaw responded positively saying that he will review the demand. The project may require around ₹5,000 crore. Therefore, the issue will be studied thoroughly and raised in Parliament,” Raghavendra Jagirdar, who was on the delegation, told The Hindu.

A survey for the proposed railway line was carried out during the British rule in the 1930s. However, it came to a halt as the freedom movement reached a peak.

Mr. Jigajinagi accompanied the delegation to the Ministers.
