Thiruvananthapuram to greet New Year with lights and flowers
City to host 10-day flower show ‘Vasantholsavam 2024’ and New Year lighting
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduThiruvananthapuram will be adorned with flowers under starry lights to greet the New Year, with a 10-day flower show ‘Vasantholsavam 2024’ and New Year lighting getting under way on December 25.
Kanakakkunnu, the venue of Vasantholsavam, will be illuminated with stellar lights, offering the city residents and visitors a visual treat till January 3. An organising committee for ‘Vasantholsavam’ has been formed with Tourism Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas as chairperson, Minister for General Education and Labour V. Sivankutty, and Minister for Food and Civil Supplies G.R. Anil as chief trustees.
Adding to the spectacle will be installations and glittering structures along with an astounding variety of flowering plants arranged in visually pleasing patterns, elevating the festive charm and ambiance. “The illumination will raise the festive mood of the people getting ready to usher in the New Year,” said Mr. Riyas.
“The lighting and installations at Kanakakkunnu, arranged by the Tourism department, will match the festival occasions of famous metropolitan cities of the world. Thiruvananthapuram is already in the list of most trending tourist destinations in the world, and this event will attract more domestic tourists to the city,” he said.
Visitors can buy plants at the show. Trade fair, food corners, and amusement activities for children will enhance the scale of this year’s flower festival and New Year lighting. Various competitions for schoolchildren and adults have also been planned. Participants can register through the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) or festival office at Kanakakkunnu, which will start functioning from December 19.
