More than 5.5 lakh applicants will compete for 4,002 posts of constables in Jammu & Kashmir, officials said on Friday (November 29, 2024). The hiring comes in the backdrop of irregularities that had marred the selection of sub-inspectors in 2022.

J&K Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo chaired a meeting of the civil administration and the police on Friday to take stock of preparations made by Deputy Commissioners to conduct the exam through the J&K Services Selection Recruitment Board (SSRB).

Mr. Dulloo directed the Deputy Commissioners “to visit as many exam centres as possible”. He cautioned that no untoward incident of copying or malpractice should occur, and ordered deployment of enough security personnel at each centre.

Officials will personally monitor the process till the OMR sheets are sent back to SSRB by the police, a government spokesman said.

Official figures suggested that 5.59 lakh candidates were scheduled to appear in the exams for 4002 posts of constables (Home Department) to be held on December 1, 8 and 22.

The recruitment of sub-inspectors was overshadowed by allegations of question paper leak. According to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the former chairman of JKSSB, then controller of examination of JKSSB, gang members from Haryana, teachers and some serving and retired officials of J&K Police, including a DSP, and CRPF personnel, were questioned during the investigation.

The accused had hatched a conspiracy with officials of JKSSB, a Bengaluru-based private company, beneficiary candidates and others, and caused gross irregularities in conduct of the written examination. The CBI investigation revealed the alleged payment of ₹20 lakh to ₹30 lakh was made by candidates and their families to the accused for accessing the question papers before the examination that was held on March 27, 2022.
