Two habitual offenders arrested by Sivaganga police; 90 sovereigns of gold jewellery and silver articles recovered
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduIn a major breakthrough, the special teams formed by the Sivaganga police, arrested two habitual offenders and seized 90 sovereigns of gold jewellery and silver articles stolen from a house in Devakottai sub-division on November 20.
Following a complaint from Chiranjeevi Gnanasekaran of Ram Nagar 6th Street, the police had registered a case.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that the complainant, his wife and daughter had locked their house and went to work on November 20. When they returned home, they found the door broken and valuables missing. They had purchased a little over 120 sovereigns of jewellery.
Superintendent of Police Dongare Praveen Umesh had formed five special teams comprising DSP Parthiban and others.
After going through a number of CCTV footages, the team zeroed in on some suspects. Based on the confessions, they detained Nagaraj alias Poonai Nagaraj (55) of Vaazhavandan Kottai near Thuvakudi in Tiruchi district and his accomplice Raja alias Alagu Raja (53) of Nagamangalam near Srirangam.
The police team seized 90 sovereigns of gold jewellery and silver articles from the accused.
Speaking to reporters, the police said that the complainant had purchased the jewels for the daughter’s wedding. They had kept these in the almirah. They were working in a school and the daughter was employed in the Postal department.
The CCTV footage showed movement of many people on the particular day on which the crime had occurred. After discreet probe, they secured the two suspects.
Both the accused figured in a number of house break-ins and other criminal offences in Sivaganga and Devakottai over the last two months, it has come to light. The police said that Raja alias Alagu Raja had served in prisons for 18 years for murder and other heinous crimes.
A two-wheeler was seized from the duo and a team had gone to few other cities in connection with crimes committed by them. The SP appreciated the police officers for their commendable work as the case was solved within a week’s time.
The Devakottai Town police had registered the case. Further investigation was on.
