A 52-year-old man who was driving a car from Sriperumbudur was caught in the middle of flood overflowing a causeway on Cooum near Maduravoyal in the early hours of Saturday. Police and the public rescued him and the car using an earthmover machine.

Due to heavy rain that lashed catchment areas around the city and adjoining areas, the sluice gates of lakes were opened and excess water was discharged on the rivers including Cooum. Since it was overflowing a causeway in Adayalampattu near Maduravoyal, police cordoned off the area by erecting iron barricades on both sides of the causeway.

At 4 am, the 52-year-old man who has been identified as Sunil Vargheese was said to be driving his sedan from Sriperumbudur which is his workplace to his residence Mogappair. Despite police personnel warning, he pulled away the barricades and drove his vehicle into the flood thinking that he could reach other side easily.  However, the car could not move forward in the middle of the causeway and the flood dragged it further.

He was quickly evacuated from the car and subsequently, police pulled the car from the water using a crane.
