Ministers of the Siddaramiah Cabinet and leaders of the Congress party visited Hassan on Friday to review the preparations for Swabhimani Samavesha to be held at the S.M. Krishna Nagar on the outskirts of Hassan on December 5.

The Congress party is organising the event in association with the followers of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Minister for Social Welfare H.C. Mahadevappa, Minister for Animal Husbandry K. Venkatesh, Minister for Cooperation, Yathindra Siddaramaiah, MLC, K.M. Shivalinge Gowda, MLA, and other leaders of the party visited the spot and reviewed the preparations.

Speaking to the media, Mr. Mahadevappa said that the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee and the forum of backward classes would be holding the event jointly. “This is an event to strengthen the quality leadership,” the Minister said.

The leaders of backward classes had met Chief Minister and expressed their wish to hold a convention. The Chief Minister and leaders of Congress would take part in the event. “We are expecting a large gathering of people from Hassan and neighbouring districts,” he said.

Mr. Venkatesh said Hassan was chosen for the event in view of strengthening the party in the region. “We have held many events in Mysuru. We thought of holding this here in Hassan,” he added.

Mr. Yathindra Siddaramaiah said the convention was to send a message across the nation against the Central government’s misuse of investigation agencies and attempt to remove democratically elected governments. “The BJP is trying to dislodge the elected government by misusing the governor’s office. Similarly, the BJP is raising the non-issue of waqf properties. The BJP also issued more notices on the waqf issues than the Congress government,” he stated.
