MGU’s guidelines for paper valuation spark concern among a section of teachers

Concerns about additional clerical tasks expected of teachers during evaluation process

A new set of guidelines issued by Mahatma Gandhi University for answer sheet valuation for the four-year undergraduate courses appears to have sparked dissatisfaction among a section of teachers in affiliated colleges.

According to teachers, evaluation camps were centrally organised by the university. Under the new system, implemented as part of the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) framework, these camps are now being conducted at the respective colleges.

Classes suspended

This move has raised concerns about the additional clerical tasks expected of them during the evaluation process. Responsibilities such as distributing answer sheets and entering marks into the portal, which were once handled by the university staff, have now fallen entirely on the shoulders of the college teachers. The commencement of the valuation camps on December 10, without sufficient preparation, has led to the suspension of classes in many colleges. Consequently, several institutions are set to close from December 17 when the camps for all subjects are scheduled to begin.

Highlighting these issues, three members of the university senate, Saju Mathew, Joseph Deryl and Sajith Babu, have submitted a petition to the Vice-Chancellor. The petition calls for a review of the decision to double the number of papers evaluated for four-year degree courses and to reconsider the excessive powers granted to the Vigilance Squad in the evaluation process.
