Telangana IPS cadre review under active consideration, says Union Minister

Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, on Tuesday, informed that the review of the Indian Police Service (IPS) cadre in Telangana is under active consideration. However, he stated that it is not feasible to specify a definite timeline for the process.

Giving reply to a question raised by Bhongir MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy in the Lok Sabha, the Minister acknowledged that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had sent proposals regarding cadre review in 2021 and again in January, August, and October this year. He also mentioned that 49 IPS officers have been appointed in Telangana since 2021.

Mr. Kiran Kumar Reddy sought details on whether the Ministry was aware that the cadre review for Telangana has been pending since 2021 and whether the Chief Minister had requested an increase of 29 IPS posts to address TG’s security requirements.

In his response, Mr. Nityanand Rai explained that the Central government ordinarily conducts a review of IPS cadre strength and composition in consultation with the respective State governments. Changes are made as deemed necessary. He added that the last review for Telangana was carried out in 2016.
