NHRC issues notice to West Bengal government over abduction, assault on infant

by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduCalling it an incident which indicates sheer lawlessness, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday (December 11, 2024) issued notice to West Bengal government over a case of abduction and sexual assault of a seven-month-old baby who was taken away by the miscreants from footpath.
The incident took place on November 30. The baby is reported to be the daughter of a homeless couple. She was seen lying on the pavement when some people spotted her and informed the police. She is currently undergoing medical treatment at a government hospital in Kolkata.
Observing the incident to be serious violation of the infant’s human rights, the Commission issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, West Bengal calling for a detailed report within two weeks. The report is expected to include the status of the FIR, the health of the baby victim, and compensation, if any provided to the aggrieved family.
“The incident indicates sheer lawlessness. Antisocial elements roam freely and indulge in any unlawful activity without fear,” the commission said.
