Mayiladuthurai police arrest man for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl

A 20-year-old man has been remanded in judicial custody in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a 17-year-old college student from Nannilam taluk in Tiruvarur district.

The crime allegedly was committed on November 25. The victim filed a complaint at the Mayiladuthurai All Women Police Station on November 27. She alleged that she got acquainted with the accused, Abhinath, through social media.

The police have registered a case under Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The victim was produced before a court under Section 183 of the Code of Criminal Procedure for a confidential inquiry.

Abhinath was arrested and remanded in judicial custody. He has been lodged in Nagapattinam prison.

The police are questioning five of Abhinath’s friends to ascertain their involvement in the crime.

District Superintendent of Police G. Stalin told The Hindu that it was not a case of gang-rape as reported in a section of media.
