Centre, State to work together to better weavers’ lives: Union Minister
State Textiles Minister Savitha submits proposals to the Centre for mega handloom clusters at Dharmavaram and Pithapuram in Andhra Pradesh
by A.D. Rangarajan · The HinduUnion Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh has stated that the Central Government will collaborate with various States to improve the living conditions and economic status of weavers.
Speaking after a review meeting with departmental officials, headed by Andhra Pradesh Minister for Textiles S. Savitha and Commissioner (Textiles and Handlooms) Rekha Rani, held here on Sunday, Mr. Singh said efforts would be made to extend the market networking for the weavers’ products and also provide remunerative prices for them.
Mr. Singh also reiterated the government’s resolve to meet the educational and healthcare needs of the weaving community. In this connection, he said the handloom would have to certainly be prioritised and protected from the onslaught of power looms.
Ms. Savitha explained to the Union Minister the steps taken to improve cotton yield and storage, increase productivity, and improve the status of jute products. She requested the Centre sanction ₹200 crore for mini textile clusters in Chirala, Mangalagiri, Venkatagiri, Mylavaram, and Yemmiganur.
The Minister also submitted proposals for the establishment of mega handloom clusters in Dharmavaram, Sri Satya Sai district, at ₹35.80 crore and in Pithapuram, Ambedkar Konaseema district, at ₹15 crore, the construction of individual looms and workshops in Penugonda at ₹6.27 crore, the establishment of a Handloom and Handicrafts Museum in Tullur mandal at ₹15 crore, and a mega textiles park on a 1,000-acre site under PM-MITRA at ₹800 crore.
