K.P. Viswanathan’s resignation was a mark of his distinguished stand: Chennithala
Memorial event observed on first death anniversary of former Minister and senior Congress leader K.P. Viswanathan
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduSenior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala, MLA, said that the resignation of K.P. Viswanathan from his Ministerial position in light of the High Court’s observations was a testament to his strong and principled stand.
He was speaking at a memorial event held at the District Congress Committee (DCC) office on Sunday on the first death anniversary of former Minister and senior Congress leader K.P. Viswanathan.
While Ministers and even the Chief Minister, who have been faced with court verdicts against them, refused to step down, Viswanathan took the rare step of resigning despite no personal wrongdoing. “I openly admit that the decision taken by me and Oommen Chandy to accept Viswanathan’s resignation was wrong,” Mr. Chennithala acknowledged.
Despite several differences of opinion over the years with senior Congress leader C.N. Balakrishnan, both of them remained unwavering in their commitment to the party’s success, always standing united for the cause. In all crises, Viswanathan was a leader whom workers could trust, a pillar of strength for the party, Mr. Chennithala recalled.
The function began with a floral tribute at the portrait of Viswanathan. The event was chaired by DCC vice president C.O. Jacob with United Democratic Front convener M.M. Hassan delivering the main memorial speech.
Former Speaker Therambil Ramakrishnan, former MP T.N. Prathapan, T.J. Saneesh Kumar Joseph, MLA, senior Congress leaders, among others, spoke at the event.
