Welfare schemes for Manjolai tea plantation workers being implemented, says Minister

The Tamil Nadu government has been implementing special social welfare schemes for the benefit of Manjolai tea plantation workers, said Municipal Administration Minister K. N. Nehru here on Thursday.

The Minister visited Manjolai to handover the keys of Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) flats at South Pappankulam near Ambasamudram. At the event, he assured the beneficiaries that all the necessary facilities will be provided to the people living in Manjolai as per the court order.

He further added that houses would be constructed for the Manjolai tea plantation workers under the ‘Kalaignar Kanavu Illam’ scheme. Few residents in Manjolai have also submitted a petition to the Minister expressing their desire to live together in one location, similar to Samathuvapuram.

Later in the day, the Minister chaired a review meeting in Tirunelveli along with the TN Legislative Assembly Speaker M. Appavu.

The review meeting primarily discussed the various development projects in the district including the ongoing construction of Porunai museum at a cost of ₹33.2 crore which commenced on June 2023, western bypass and highway projects under CRIDP scheme, Ambasamudram highways project under NABARD, construction of rail overbridge across Kulavanigarpuram manned level crossing, bio diversity park near Manimuthar dam at a cost of ₹7 crore and construction of Manur arts college.

At the meeting, the Minister issued the orders to allocate TNUHDB flats in Reddiarpatti to 16 beneficiaries from the Manjolai tea plantation. He urged the officials to complete the ongoing development works ahead of schedule.

District Collector K. P. Karthikeyan, Corporation Mayor G. Ramakrishnan, Corporation Commissioner N. O. Sukhaputra, MLA Abdul Wahab, Kalakkad-Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve Deputy Director M. Ilayaraja and other officials were present at the meeting.
