Concerns raised over pollution and silt accumulation in Singanallur Lake
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduSinganallur Lake, a 288-acre water body in Coimbatore, is facing growing concerns over pollution and neglect.
The Coimbatore District Committee of the Tamil Nadu Vivasaigal Sangam, affiliated to CPI (M), has submitted a petition to the Coimbatore Corporation, drawing attention to pollution caused by untreated sewage being discharged into the lake through inlet channels.
V.P. Elangovan, president of the association, expressed his concern, saying, “The sewage inflow has caused significant damage to the groundwater, and the channels that once carried rainwater are now flooded with sewage. Additionally, the stored water in the lake has not been released, exacerbating the problem. Over two decades ago, nearby farms grew crops like banana, sugarcane, and betel leaves. But now, only coconut trees and fodder are cultivated.”
An environmentalist, speaking on condition of anonymity, alleged the lake has not been desilted for over 30 years. Originally 13 feet deep, the lake’s depth has reduced to just four feet due to silt accumulation, resulting in the deterioration of its ecosystem and water quality.
Further concerns were raised about the blocking of outlet channels due to encroachment by coconut trees, as well as the damage to sluice gates, preventing the outflow of water from the lake.
The lake receives water from three inlets: the Ganapathy-Uppilipalayam channel, Sanganoor stream, and Raja Vaikkal. These channels are reportedly carrying sewage into the lake. It also has three sluice gates, but they are damaged, and two weir dams, with only one currently functional.
Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran said, “ A two MLD sewage treatment plant (STP) has been constructed near the lake’s inlet channel to treat water before it flows into the lake. It is expected to become operational within two months. Additionally, another two MLD STP is planned. Complaints regarding encroachment of outlet channels will be reviewed, and appropriate action will be taken.”
