The cybercrime police arrested a three-member gang from Gujarat for allegedly cheating Meesho, an online marketing company, of ₹5.5 crore in seven months.

The accused were identified as Uttam Kumar, 31, and his associates Pratap Bhai, 21, and Moulik, 20.

According to the police, the accused joined Meesho as a supplier and registered their company as Om Sai Fashion. They roped in third-party agents to create fake buyers. The accused would book products from Meesho with fake addresses and get the product as undelivered. The accused would then raise a complaint with the company stating that they had received fake products and apply for a refund from the company.

Using this modus operandi and misusing the loophole in the company policy, the accused had made over 2500 fake purchase orders and claimed a refund from the company. Between January and July this year, the accused had claimed a refund of ₹5.5 crore.

The company initiated a probe and found that all the refunds were going to only two bank accounts. Based on a complaint filed by Meesho’s nodal officer, the police arrested the gang.

A probe revealed that the gang was involved in a similar offense in 2023, and a case was registered in the limits of Whitefield police station.
