The Delhi police have arrested four persons for stealing 140 metres of signalling cable from Delhi Metro’s Blue Line, which disrupted operations for close to six hours on November 5.

Rashid Malik, 26, Shahrukh Malik, 29, Ramzan, 32, and Junaid, 32, were arrested between December 6 and 10 under Section 303(2) (theft) and 329(3) (criminal trespass) of the BNS and Section 74 (punishment for sabotage of Delhi Metro) of the DMRC Act, said the police. A senior officer said that the four are part of a larger gang and that a search operation is under way to nab the other gang members.

The officer added that a probe was launched following the theft between Moti Nagar and Kirti Nagar metro stations. “After scanning footage of over 500 CCTVs, a four-wheeler was identified in which the stolen cable had been loaded. The vehicle was traced to Mustafabad. From there, we obtained leads about the suspects,” said the officer.

He added that the police’s Metro unit has so far solved 22 theft cases out of 44 cases registered this year and arrested a total of 53 accused persons.

“The police have conducted a security audit of metro stations and written to the DMRC regarding the vulnerabilities points,” he also said.
