Bengaluru city police crackdown on wheeling offenders, booking 827 cases in three years
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduThe Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) have booked 827 cases against offenders for performing wheeling stunts in the last three years.
During this period, the police arrested 683 bike riders and seized 677 vehicles. Among those arrested, 170 were minors. A total fine amount of ₹58.19 lakh was collected in connection with these cases.
The police said several cases booked in 2024 are still pending in the court, and the fines collected are only expected to increase. In each case, the vehicle owners are fined up to ₹25,000.
Data shows that enforcement against offenders has increased in 2024 compared to previous years. In 2022, the police booked 283 cases, which decreased to 219 in 2023. However, so far this year, 325 cases have already been registered.
City Police Commissioner B. Dayananda said on Friday that the police would carry out special drives to curb such incidents and increase enforcement against offenders.
“Four persons, who were recently arrested for performing wheeling stunts, were found to be under the influence of narcotics. We have booked them under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. We have also booked cases against guardians of minor offenders,” he said.
The Police Commissioner appealed to everyone not to indulge in wheeling and to ensure their vehicles are not misused for the same. Wheeling can pose a risk to the lives of not only those who are doing it but also others on the road.
Meanwhile, as part of a special drive against wheeling offenders, the police booked 76 cases, arrested 56 bike riders, and seized 75 two-wheelers in the last 10 days. Of the 56 riders, 15 were found to be minors, and four of them were under the influence of narcotics.
Separate FIRs have been booked in these instances.
