In a film-style operation, an armed gang attacked a police vehicle at midnight and took away an accused, who was arrested earlier in the day in connection with a fake currency case by the Srikakulam police, at VL Puram Centre in Rajamahendravaram on December 13 (Friday).

According to police sources, the G. Sigadam police of Srikakulam district registered a case against a gang which was cheating public by exchanging fake notes. As part of investigation, a police team from G. Sigadam picked up an accused, Rapaka Prabhakar alias Pratap, from Narsapuram in West Godavari district on Friday. They later reached Rajamahendravaram looking for another accused, Krishna Murthy, but could not find him at home.

When the police team was returning from Rajamahendravaram, a 20-member gang chased the police vehicle in two cars and four bikes. They intercepted the vehicle at VL Puram, attacked the personnel, and took away Prabhakar from their custody. Even before the police could come out of the shock, the assailants disappeared.

Srikakulam district Superintendent of Police K.V. Maheswar Reddy said, “A five-member police team headed by an SI went to West Godavari for the operation. They lodged a complaint with the Prakash Nagar police in Rajamahendravaram after the incident. We are trying to identify the vehicles and the persons who took away the accused from police custody through CCTV footages. Prabhakar was involved in fake currency cases in Bhimavaram, Rajamahendravaram and Eluru districts earlier.”

Eluru Range IG G.V.G. Ashok Kumar told The Hindu that a case was registered and a hunt launched to nab the gang.
