Safety measures to be enhanced at Alappuzha KSRTC bus stand following complaints

After nightfall, the poorly lit Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus station in Alappuzha has become a haven for anti-social elements. Following widespread complaints, the police and Excise department have decided to intensify patrolling at the bus stand.

A high-level meeting chaired by District Collector Alex Varghese on Tuesday decided to initiate stringent action against the immoral activities reported at the bus stand. The meeting directed the police to enhance surveillance at the bus terminal and its surroundings to curb anti-social activities.

Officials said that several incidents of inappropriate behaviour, particularly during late hours, had been reported. There were also instances of physical attacks on individuals who tried to intervene and question such activities. Apart from intensifying patrolling, the meeting decided to form a joint squad comprising the police, Alappuzha municipal authorities, excise officials, representatives of shikhara boat operators and residents’ associations. The squad will conduct regular inspections in and around the bus station.

Alappuzha municipal chairperson K.K. Jayamma, who attended the meeting, said the civic body would soon install high-mast lights at the bus station. She said that the tendering process for this had already been completed. The District Collector said that more high-mast lights would be installed in the area after discussing with MP and MLA. Additionally, 10 CCTV cameras will be installed near the KSRTC bus stand for monitoring. The Care for Alappuzha will sponsor these cameras, said an official.

Police and Excise department officials, representatives of the KSRTC, Alappuzha municipal authorities and others attended the meeting.
