Pregnant policewoman killed in road accident on Pudukottai-Tiruchi highway

A woman constable serving in Pudukottai district was killed in a road accident on the Pudukottai-Tiruchi national highway at Mandaiyur in the district on Thursday. Police gave the name of the victim as M. Vimala, 28, of Pallathupatti in the district. She was nine months pregnant. The constable was serving in Mandaiyur police station.

Police sources said Vimala was riding a scooter from her house at Pallathupatti to Mandaiyur police station for duty in the morning when a sports utility vehicle rammed the scooter from behind. The constable died on the spot. The post-mortem was conducted at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchi and the body was later handed over to her family members. The Mandaiyur police arrested S. Veninraj, 30, of Pudukottai who drove the sports utility vehicle.

CM condoles death

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has condoled the death of Vimala. In a statement, Mr. Stalin said her death was an irreparable loss to the Tamil Nadu police department and to her family members.

He ordered a relief of ₹25 lakh to the family of Vimala, an official release said.
