2 dead, crops under water in Tiruchi
by The Hindu Bureau · The HinduTwo persons were killed, and standing crops raised on 380 hectares were affected in the heavy rain that lashed several parts of the Tiruchi district over the last few days.
The deceased persons were identified as P. Sivasakthi of Sivavayalur; and M. Thangavel of Anna Nagar in Musiri.
While Thangavel died in the collapse of his house on Friday, Sivasakthi, an agricultural engineering student, drowned in the Big Tank at Kanakiliyanallur on Saturday.
Sivasakthi is said to have drowned after rescuing two of his friends who fell in the tank. Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spot and retrieved the body, which has been sent for postmortem. Sources said standing paddy crop raised on several hectares in Lalgudi, Pullampadi and Thiruverumbur was submerged in the water.
Citing a preliminary report, Collector M. Pradeep Kumar told The Hindu that standing crops raised on 380 hectares in the district were affected. Sixty houses were damaged.
