ECI Father Bishop Ezra Sargunam passes away, aged 86

Evangelical Church of India first national leader Bishop Ezra Sargunam, 86, passed away on Sunday. The burial service will be held in Chennai on September 26. 

Father Bishop Ezra Sargunam played a role in campaigning for sensitising political leaders about challenges faced by the Scheduled Castes, minorities and tribals. He was instrumental in ordaining India’s first transgender pastor. 

Chief Minister M.K. Stalin condoled the death of Evangelical Church of India bishop Ezra Sargunam. In a statement, the CM recalled that the Bishop’s allegiance to the Dravidian movement and his long association with late DMK leader and former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

Mr. Stalin recalled having taken part various events in which the bishop had also participated. The bishop was a trusted guide to those in the Christian faith and earned a reputation from people of all sections of the society, he said.

“The death of bishop Ezra Sargunam, who has been working for the protection of the welfare and rights of minorities, is a huge loss not only to those in the Christian faith but to believers of social justice,” Mr. Stalin said.
