The United Democratic Front (UDF) made gains in Palakkad district in the local body byelections held in three wards. When it retained the ninth ward in the Chalissery panchayat, the UDF wrested the fourth ward in the Thachampara panchayat from the Left Democratic Front (LDF). The victory in the Thachampara ward led to the UDF grabbing power in the panchayat.

UDF’s Ali Thekkath defeated his LDF opponent by 28 votes, securing power in the Thachampara panchayat. The crucial byelection was brought about by the resignation of CPI’s George Thachampara from the 15-member council. The UDF toppled the LDF with eight seats against seven.

In the Chalissery byelection, UDF’s K. Sujita defeated the LDF candidate by 104 votes. The byelection was necessitated by the resignation of panchayat president A.V. Sandhya. In the 15-member council, the UDF has eight members and the LDF seven.

However, the LDF retained its seat in Koduvayur panchayat. LDF’s A. Muraleedharan defeated his UDF rival by 108 votes in Koduvayur’s Kolodu ward.
