Police issue update on man's body discovered in woodland

Police have issued an update after the body of a man was discovered in a patch of woodland in Tameside on Thursday (October 3). Emergency services were called to a concern for welfare report off Ashton Street in the Dukinfield area at around 10.15am.

Officers tragically recovered the body of a man, thought to be aged in his 40s. No further details about his identity have been released by police, who said there is not believed to be a 'wider risk to the public'.

Greater Manchester Police has today (Saturday) confirmed that the death is being treated as not suspicious. Police vehicles were at the scene for hours on Thursday, with the area taped off.

Ashton Street, which a continuation of Shepley Road close to the Globe roundabout, was filled with officers throughout the morning. Officers were patrolling the scene before a private ambulance arrived.

Locals spoke of their shock following the incident. Nicola Bridge, 38, Team Leader at nearby Globe Canteen and Coffee said: "We heard all the sirens and all the commotion this morning. Then we saw the cordon and we knew it must be something serious.

"All the customers were coming and asking what had happened. It's so sad to hear someone has died. Especially someone so young. All our thoughts are with his family."

In a statement issued at the time of the tragic find, a GMP spokesperson said: "At 10:15am this morning (Thursday 3 October) we were called to Ashton Street, Dukinfield, to reports of concern for welfare.

"Emergency services attended and sadly discovered the body of a man believed to be in his 40s. We do not believe there is a risk to the wider public. A scene is in place and enquiries are ongoing."
