Emergency services close road as woman hurt in three-car smash at busy junction

A woman was taken to hospital after a three-car crash at a busy junction in Leigh last night.

The smash happened at the junction of Atherleigh Way and Kirkhall Lane, close to the Asda supermarket, just before 8.20pm on Thursday evening (September 19). A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said it involved three vehicles.

Police officers, paramedics and fire crews raced to the scene with pictures taken last night showing a cordon in place across the busy junction as crews responded. One woman was taken to hospital from the scene, the police spokesperson confirmed.

Her injuries were believed to be minor. Fire crews were on the scene for more than an hour 'making the area safe'.

A stretch of the road was closed off until around 11pm. A spokesperson for GMP said: "Police were called at 8.17pm yesterday evening to Atherleigh Way to reports of an RTC involving three vehicles.

"One woman taken into hospital with minor injuries. The roads closed were reopened at around 11pm."

A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: "At around 8.25pm this evening (Thursday 19 September), two fire engines from Leigh and Wigan fire stations and the enhanced rescue unit from Ashton fire station attended an incident involving three vehicles on the junction of Atherleigh Way and Kirkhall Lane, Wigan.

“Crews arrived quickly and treated one casualty at the scene who was later taken to hospital by the North West Ambulance Service. Firefighters worked alongside Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe before departing after an hour and 10 minutes in attendance.”
