Mum-of-three who got out of her car after it overturned on M6 dies

by · Manchester Evening News

A 52-year-old woman tragically took her own life when she was struck by a van on the M6 motorway, a coroner has ruled.

Lisa Kelsall left her home on the evening of April 8 before she was then spotted 'driving erratically' on the motorway, Stoke-on-Trent Live reports. After her Vauxhall Mokka overturned on the slip road between the M6 and M62 in Cheshire, Lisa got out of the car and walked onto the carriageway.

The mum-of-three and grandmother-to-be, from Norton, was then tragically struck by a Citroen Relay van. She suffered 'unsurvivable injuries'.

A coroner has now ruled that the Travelodge worker - who was also known as Lisa Lang - took her own life, Stoke-on-Trent Live reports. The inquest heard that Lisa had a 'history of mental health issues, had been the victim of domestic abuse, and suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder'.

Cheshire assistant coroner Charlotte Keighley said: "In the period leading up to her death, Lisa had attempted to take her own life on several occasions and during the week prior to her death had spoken about driving onto the motorway to take her own life.

"Late on the evening of 8 April, Lisa left her home address in her car expressing an intention to take her own life and in the early hours of 9 April was seen driving erratically on the southbound carriageway of the M6 resulting in her car being involved in a collision, resting on its side in between lanes.

"Lisa got out of her vehicle. She was then struck by a Citroen Relay van knocking her to the floor causing unsurvivable injuries."

Cheshire Police initially arrested a man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the tragedy. He was later released under investigation.

Following her death, Lisa's family issued a tribute through Cheshire Police. They said she was a grandma-to-be and was 'taken too soon'.

"(A) Loving daughter, mother and grandmother to be, taken too soon", Lisa's family said. "RIP Lisa Kelsall. Forever in our hearts."
