Rail passengers across the north west are facing travel disruption this morning. Several services have been cancelled on Northern routes to Manchester, Manchester Airport and Liverpool.

The operator has stated that some of the services are affected by changes to the timetable. The disruption comes as Northern is under increasing pressure over service unreliability in recent months - most significantly affecting Sunday service. The company recently warned it could take three years for services to fully improve.

An update on the National Rail website says: "Short notice cancellations are expected in the north west today, due to train crew not being available. Please check your journey before travelling.

"If you do travel, please leave yourself plenty of time to do so and don't rely on last trains of the day, as they may be earlier than usual or cancelled at short notice.

"There will be no Northern services on the below routes – but travel is available to and from some stations along those routes with other train operators and ticket acceptance is in place to accommodate Northern customers."

The four routes in question are:

  • Manchester Piccadilly – Stoke-on-Trent (and Macclesfield) Customers should use alternative services with Avanti West Coast and CrossCountry
  • Manchester Piccadilly – Chester (via Altrincham) Customers should use Metrolink as far as Altrincham or travel with Transport for Wales for Chester. (Please note: Services will not stop at stations between Hale and Mouldsworth)
  • Stalybridge – Wigan North Western Customers for Stalybridge should use TransPennine Express, for Ashton please use Metrolink and Bolton will be served by the Manchester to Preston service.
  • Manchester Victoria – Chester (via Warrington Bank Quay) Customers should use Transport for Wales services

In a statement shared on X, Northern said: "Ticket acceptance is in place today for any further cancellations on the below routes."

These include Transpennine Express services from Liverpool to Manchester; Liverpool to Preston; Manchester to Stalybridge; Manchester to Stockport and to Sheffield; Oxenholme to Preston to Manchester to Manchester Airport; and Liverpool to Sheffield.
