The Met Office has issued two yellow weather warnings for snow and ice as an early winter cold snap hits the UK.

Up to 20cm of snow could hit the UK over the coming days, with forecasters warning that the worst-affected areas may see power cuts and disruption to road and public transport as temperatures plummet amid the severe weather.

A yellow alert is now in place in parts of northern Scotland, including Orkney and Shetland, where up to 10cm of snow may accumulate on higher ground by Monday morning, the Met Office said. The alert will remain in force until 11am on Monday.

From Monday evening, a second warning will come into force, covering areas in the East Midlands, Yorkshire, Wales and north of England. The warning will be in force from 7pm on Monday until 10am on Tuesday.

The Met Office warning states: "A period of rain, sleet and snow will occur during Monday evening, overnight into Tuesday morning. The most likely scenario is for most of the snow to accumulate on hills, with 5 to 10 cm possible above 200 metres and perhaps as much as 15 to 20 cm above 300 metres.

"There is a small chance of snow settling at lower levels, where 5 to 10 cm would prove much more disruptive, but this remains very uncertain. As rain, sleet and snow clear on Tuesday morning, ice may form on untreated surfaces."

Tom Morgan, Met Office meteorologist, said it would be "very cold for the for the time of year" with widespread overnight frosts and snow settling on the ground in some parts. He said: "The North could even see overnight minimums down to -8C, possibly even -10C, so quite unusual for November.”

Mr Morgan said the public can best prepare for the wintry weather by checking their cars are suitable for icy and potentially snowy conditions and to take extra supplies including food, blankets and a fully charged mobile phone with them on journeys.
