Manchester suspect named following violent disorder in Southport

A north Manchester man will face court after being accused of taking part in violence which erupted in Southport over the summer. Violent scenes spilled out in the Merseyside town on July 30.

It followed a knife attack which took place in Southport the day before, killing three children - Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Olivia da Silva Aguira, nine. Further disorder took place in towns and cities across the UK, including in Manchester and Bolton.

Now, police have charged a man from New Moston in connection with the Southport disorder. Merseyside Police says Laurence Howarth has been charged with violent disorder.

The 33-year-old, of Carnoustie Close, New Moston, is due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court this morning (October 14). He is one of four men to have been charged by police this morning in connection with disorder in Merseyside, following incidents that took place in Southport and Liverpool.

A Merseyside Police spokesman added: "The total number of arrests for violent disorder in Merseyside now stands at 129 people, with 92 charged and 67 people sentenced to a combined 145 years and two months.
