Police tape off main road following reports of person 'hit by car'
by James Holt · Manchester Evening NewsPolice and paramedics taped off a main road in Wigan on Monday night (November 4) following reports of a person being hit by car.
It is understood the person, who witnesses claimed was a teenager and on a bike, was struck on Wigan Road in the Bryn area, near Ashton-in-Makerfield.
Emergency services raced to the scene of the collision, near to the junction with Bryn Road, and taped off the area throughout the evening amid investigations.
One witness said there were 'multiple medics surrounding someone' in the road following the crash, which is reported to have also involved a pushbike close to the Bryn Cross Surgery.
"Looks like the car hit someone on the crossing. Windscreen smashed and police have everything taped off and directing traffic," said one person.
Another said: "The young lad on the bike was cycling to the middle of the junction and then unfortunately cycled into a car that was turning into Downall Green Road. Very upsetting to see."
"I came past just after the accident and then again as the police were blocking the road off. It looked like someone had been hit by a car," said another eyewitness.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed the road was closed off on Monday night amid investigations into the collision. The force has not yet provided further details.
A post from Greater Manchester Police: "Police are currently in attendance at the scene of a Road Traffic Collision on Wigan road, junction of Bryn Road, Wigan.
"At this time, there is a full closure on this junction whilst police conduct their enquiries and investigations.
"The road is likely to remain closed for some time and officers are advising motorist to avoid the area and find an alternative route to complete your journey."
