Cleaning windows with one common kitchen item will make condensation 'disappear for good'

by · Manchester Evening News

Condensation on windows may seem like a minor issue, but if left unchecked, it can lead to issues in your home and potentially cost you money. Unaddressed window condensation can result in dampness and increased humidity in a room, making the house colder and promoting mould growth.

Mould not only damages walls and is challenging to remove, but it can also impact your health. The excess moisture also forces your heating system to work harder to warm up your home, leading to higher energy bills.

However, Lynsey Crombie, also known as the 'Queen of Clean', has revealed a simple solution to combat condensation using a common kitchen item. It may sound odd, but ordinary washing-up liquid can help eliminate condensation and prevent it from forming, saving you the hassle of constantly wiping your windows throughout the day, reports Bristol Live

Condensation forms when water vapour comes into contact with a cold surface, resulting in droplet formation. However, washing-up liquid reduces the water's surface tension and creates a protective barrier.

A tiny amount of washing-up liquid leaves behind an invisible thin layer that prevents droplets from sticking to the glass surface and accumulating.

Lynsey reveals her clever trick to combat window condensation without leaving smears: "Pop a tiny amount [of washing up liquid] onto a dry microfibre cloth and rub all over the glass pane, you won't get smears as you are using the tiniest amount. This creates a barrier and prevents condensation. This is such a brilliant old-school tip that works so well."

For those looking to avoid the expense of dehumidifiers or window vacuums, Lynsey's method offers an affordable alternative. To prevent window condensation, it's essential to manage moisture levels in your home. Lynsey advises against drying clothes on radiators as it can lead to more condensation

Lynsey says: "Dry clothes outdoors or in a room with good ventilation, open a window slightly, turn off the radiator and place your drying rack in front of a bright window to help dry faster. Close the door to this room whilst the window is open."

She also recommends considering heated clothes airers as a cost-effective substitute for tumble dryers. It's important to ventilate when cooking or after taking a shower by opening a window to release steam, which helps to minimize the chances of dampness and window condensation during the colder months.
