The two men killed in a double stabbing in Manchester have been named. Emergency services raced out to Great Southern Street, in Moss Side, at around 5am on Sunday (November 17).

Tragically, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, despite the best efforts of first responders. In an update issued tonight (Monday), Greater Manchester Police has named the pair as Norman Scott, 68, and Sidy Fall, 75.

Both men were local to Moss Side. A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder on Sunday morning. It's thought he was known to one of the victims.

He has been detained under the Mental Health Act and remains in custody, GMP says. Police said on Sunday that the incident was 'isolated' and they were not looking for any other suspect.

Chief Superintendent David Meeney, district commander for the City of Manchester division at GMP, said: “Our thoughts remain with the families and loved ones, filled with grief after receiving the most devastating news yesterday. They are being supported by specialist liaison officers and kept up to date throughout our investigation.

“The tragedy of two lives lost has been felt throughout the community and further afield, and we are working tirelessly to understand the circumstances surrounding this incident. We believe this was an isolated incident and there is no wider threat to the community.

“The man we swiftly arrested on Sunday is now detained under the Mental Health Act, and we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this. The scene along Great Southern Street has been significantly reduced, enabling people who live, visit, or travel through the area to go about their business.

“Local neighbourhood officers will be visible throughout the coming days to provide a reassuring presence to the community. If you have any questions or concerns, please approach them; they would be happy to speak with you."

Enquiries remain ongoing and anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact GMP on 101, quoting 553 of November 17, 2024. Alternatively, details can be passed on anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
