Residents given chance to shape plan for 850-home Trafford Wharf development

Plans for 850 homes as part of a mixed development at the former Hilti headquarters site at Trafford Wharf have been opened up for public consultation.

Developer Cole Waterhouse wants to build 438 built-to-rent and 419 purpose-built student apartments alongside a new education facility and new ground-floor commercial units on the site off Trafford Wharf Road. It is located in the 215-acre Trafford Wharfside regeneration zone being promoted by Trafford council spanning east to west from Trafford Road to the Imperial War Museum and north to south from the ship cannal to the railway line, including Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium.

The developer says the plans represent ‘a multi-million-pound investment’ into Trafford and would ‘transform an ideally located brownfield site which sits adjacent to Trafford Wharf tram stop. It is within walking and cycling distance to local amenities in Salfrord Quays and beyond.

The consultation period runs until Friday October 4 and opinions can be posted here. Buildings would range in height from six to 24 storeys. Cole Waterhouse says the plans are at a ‘very early stage’ but it is understood the student accommodation will include a mix of cluster rooms and studio rooms including en-suite bathrooms, kitchens, living spaces and shared internal and external amenity spaces.

Cole Waterhouse chief executive Damian Flood said: “Our vision for the former Hilti site is to create much-needed homes across a range of tenures, and represents a multi-million-pound investment into Trafford with highly sustainable transport links.

“This would transform what is an ideally located brownfield site into a thriving neighbourhood which is within walking distance of the University of Salford Media City campus and is well connected to many of the university institutes across Manchester, Salford and Trafford.”
