Chaos erupts on Liverpool Street, in Salford, as crews respond to a fire

Emergency crews, 'warzones' and a car on fire: The dust settles after a Bonfire Night of chaos

by · Manchester Evening News

Greater Manchester is waking up following a night of chaos after flames soared and emergency crews came under attack. Bonfire Night turned sour in several incidents across the region on Tuesday night (November 5).

Salford, east Manchester and Tameside saw some of the most serious incidents, with fireworks used as missiles and fires 'started deliberately'. In Gorton, Vine Street 'turned into a warzone' as a car was set alight before police and firefighters responding to the mob of '20 or 30' were attacked with fireworks.

Youths were reportedly seen throwing fireworks and missiles at each other. Some passing vehicles were narrowly avoided, while others were 'caught in the crossfire'.

Three males, aged 16 to 18, have since been arrested and officers are warning that more will be detained. Later on in Gorton, fire crews were also seen in attendance off Hyde Road, near to the old Gorton Tub.

Superintendent Richard McNamara, of GMP’s City of Manchester north district, said it was 'shocking' fireworks had been 'used as a weapon towards emergency services' - as he promised a 'thorough investigation' into the Vine Road disorder. In nearby Openshaw, six people were injured after being hit by a car in a horror hit and run on Bob Massey Close, at around 8.30pm.

It's believed people had gathered for Bonfire Night celebrations when the car was driven into pedestrians. A man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, assault on an emergency worker, possession with intent to supply and failing to stop for police.

Elsewhere in Manchester, there was concern for Green Quarter residents after fireworks were set off from a balcony. Britton House Cladding Action Group posted on X: "Every single year some idiot thinks setting fireworks off from the balcony of a building with flammable cladding is a good idea! If brain cells were dynamite they couldn't blow their noses."

Meanwhile, a crowd of around 20 youths shouted 'this is our fire' and told firefighters to 'f*** off you boring c****' as they responded to a large bonfire next to railway arches in Miles Platting. Some of the most shocking scenes erupted in Ashton-under-Lyne, where fireworks were reportedly thrown at each other 'and into people's homes'.

Chaos erupted at Millennium Green and the Burlington Street area. Tameside councillor Kaleel Khan shared footage from the street on Facebook, commenting how he was 'constantly getting calls tonight from constituents desperately seeking help'.

He added: "The elderly are especially affected, feeling unsafe and distressed by the noise. People are misusing fireworks to throw at each other and into people's homes. Children and young adults are using these as toys without supervision."

In Bury, a number of people were found carrying fireworks after 10 people were stop searched by police. Over in Salford, emergency services came under attack on Liverpool Street. A car was set alight while reportedly filled with fireworks.

As firefighters responded, the crew was pelted. One firework exploded 20 yards in front of those who were trying to deal with the incident.

Elsewhere, on Goodiers Drive, masked men threw a shopping trolley in front of firefighters as they tried to deal with a blaze. Around 10 children, aged 12 to 16, also set fire to the skate park on Parr Fold Park, in Walkden.

A GMP Salford spokesperson said: "Parents do you know where your children were tonight, who they were with and what they were doing? If not the local neighbourhood policing team may remind you by a visit to their school or your home addresses.

"This park will be the focus point of the remembrance Sunday parade, and this mindless act by your children may have potentially spoil this event if you do not take responsibility. This is your community so please help respect it."
