Plan to build hundreds of new homes in Salford takes step forward

A plan to build hundreds of new homes in Salford has taken a step forward.

Permission to build a new estate with 274 homes on land at Robert Hall Street and West Park Street in Ordsall was given the green light by Salford council in March.

More than 40 percent of the development, which will be made up of houses and apartments, will be classed as affordable housing - priced below market rates. The scheme aims to develop a pocket of empty land and create a new neighbourhood with 'tree lined' streets, green spaces, and develop a sense of community.

But the plans faced a stumbling block after it was found that the land, which is owned by Salford council, was still being held for use by the town hall's children's services department, as well as planning teams.

The situation was resolved at a council meeting this week when it was agreed to transfer the site for residential development, allowing the plans to move ahead.

Once the work is finished, the homes will be managed by Dérive, a development company owned by Salford City Council. New houses on the site will be terraced to fit in with the character of the area, each with a private garden. These will include two, three, and four-bedroom homes to cater to a range of people and families.

Ordsall District Centre and St Clement’s Egerton C of E School were previously located on the land, but their closures left it empty for a number of years.

When the plan to build on the land was approved in March, Coun John Warmisham said: "If you look at that area it has been gentrified, and I know there are families there who can't afford to live there, so to see something like this has got to be welcome and I fully support it."
