The American president's decision to allow Ukraine to strike deep within Russian territory with long-range US missiles could lead to a Third World War, Russian sources have said.

The move by the US comes after months of requests by Volodymyr Zelensky to allow Ukraine's military to use US weapons to hit Russian military targets far from its border.

Both critics of the decision, which people have warned could spark World War Three, has been heard in both Moscow and Washington.

Among the first to issue such warnings is Russian politician Maria Butina, an ally of Vladimir Putin. She said: "These guys, Biden's administration, [are] trying to escalate the situation to the maximum while they still have power and are still in office.

"I have a great hope that [Donald] Trump will overcome this decision if this has been made because they are seriously risking the start of World War Three which is not in anybody's interest."

Vladimir Dzhabarov, first deputy head of the Russian upper house's international affairs committee, also said the reported move by Joe Biden would receive a swift response. He said: "This is a very big step towards the start of world war three."

Donald Trump junior posted on X: "The Military Industrial Complex seems to want to make sure they get World War 3 going before my father has a chance to create peace and save lives. Gotta lock in those $Trillions. Life be damned!!! Imbeciles!"

The UK's shadow defence secretary James Cartlidge has welcomed news that the US has allowed the use of its long-range weaponry for strikes on Russia. He told Sky News he "hopes" it leads to the UK "doing the same".

"I think it's important. And I hope it is a precursor to the UK granting full autonomy on the use of Storm Shadow. And the reason is actually quite straightforward. The fact that there are thousands of North Korean troops supporting Russia is a significant escalation."
