Put your intellect to the ultimate test with this flight-themed brainteaser.

'Fiendish' puzzles like this aren't just good for keeping the kids quiet for a couple of minutes, they're also a great form of mental exercise. In fact, research suggests brainteasers may improve your cognitive skills, better your mental speed, improve your attention span, and even go some in reducing your risk of dementia. Created by BBC Bitesize, this air traffic control test may be designed for kids, but don't underestimate its difficulty. In fact, only those with impeccable logic and impressive maths skills will be able to solve it... So, what are you waiting for?

The image above shows a busy airport departure board, with flights scheduled to iconic cities from across the globe, including New York and Paris (don't be jealous). There are four gates, from one to four, and boarding begins 40 minutes before the plane departs. The plane also leaves the gate 10 minutes before departure to allow time to get to the runway. But a plane travelling from Berlin will now land at the airport at 10.50am. Based on the information provided, which gate will be available for 20 minutes at 10.55am to unload passengers from this flight? If you're up for a real challenge, start a 30-second timer and see if you can race against the clock. Ready, set, go!

We're not giving you any clues for this tricky test, but if you're still struggling and contemplating giving up, it might be worth writing down the times between which each flight will be at a gate. Remember, they're there 40 minutes before the flight departure time to 10 minutes before the flight departure time.

It's time to start eliminating the wrong answers, so scroll back up if you're not ready to admit defeat and still reckon you can crack it. Gate 1 is incorrect as the flight to Paris will still boarding at 10.55am. Gate 3 is also incorrect because the flight to New Delhi will still be boarding passengers, and it cannot be Gate 4 because the flight to Cairo starts boarding at 10.55am. Which means only one thing. The answer has to be Gate 2. "The flight to New York leaves the gate at 10.50am and the flight to Sydney starts boarding at the gate at 11.25am," explains BBC Bitesize. "This means that Gate 2 is available between 10.50am and 11.25am."
