Donald Trump declares himself President – and weird song choice has everyone saying the same thing
Appearing on stage with his family he claimed a “magnificent victory” declaring himself the 45th and 47th president of the United States before leaving to the 1978 disco classic
by Joe Smith · The MirrorDonald Trump addressed his delighted supporters today at West Palm Beach, Florida declaring victory in the US election.
Appearing on stage with his family he claimed a “magnificent victory” declaring himself the 45th and 47th president of the United States.
"I want to thank you all very much," he says, praising the "incredible" MAGA movement. "Frankly I believe this was the best political movement of all time," he said. "We have a country that needs help very badly," he added, promising to "fix everything". "It's clear that... this is a political victory," he went on, confirming that he believed he had won the race.
"I want to thank the American people for the extraordinary honour of being elected your 47th president and your 45th president," he said, effectively claiming victory. “This is a magnificent victory for the American people that will allow us to make America great again."
In a typically rambling speech Donald Trump promised that his victory will "truly be the golden age for America". He added: "Every single day I will be fighting for you, with every single breath in my body. I will not rest until we have delivered the strong, safe and prosperous America that children deserve.
He went on to thank Elon Musk, describing how impressed he had been watching a SpaceX rocket landing recently. As Trump’s speech came to a close he jigged along to the music of the 1978 disco classic "YMCA" by the Village People.
The song has become a fixture at Trump rallies in the runup to the election, but it has been being used by the campaign to inject a bit of enthusiasm into his speeches ever since Trump recovered from Covid in 2020.
As puzzling choice for a conservative politician with strong support from the anti-LGBT religious right in America, the song is considered a gay anthem. Village People frontman Victor Willis had previously objected to Trump's use of "YMCA" at rallies but later withdrew his complaints after the song received a boost in publicity from its use at the rallies. He has since said he is content for Trump to use the song.
That didn’t stop a wave of confusion from online commenters watching his victory speech, with many baffled at his choice of soundtrack. “Why is Trump's theme tune YMCA?!?,” asked one commenter on X, formerly Twitter.
“Why does he love YMCA so much???” another asked, while a third questioned, “How will future historians explain why “YMCA” was the campaign theme song?”
"Why is the YMCA Trump’s favorite song? #wtf" exclaimed another. While another baffled social media user said: "Why does @realDonaldTrump always play YMCA? I don't think Americans understand what it means at all. Maybe he's a fan of the music video..?"
