Sir Alex Ferguson tells Man Utd who should replace Erik ten Hag as sack plan emerges

Manchester United may have to consider a managerial change if their poor form continues with Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly an advocate of Max Allegri coming in as Erik ten Hag's successor

by · The Mirror

Sir Alex Ferguson is an admirer of Max Allegri and would back him as the next Manchester United boss, according to reports in Italy.

It is only six games into the season but there is talk of a change in the dugout at Old Trafford after a poor start to the campaign, which has already seen the Red Devils lose on three occasions. Their latest reverse at the hands of Tottenham has seen the pressure ramp up on Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman was kept on in the summer despite a poor campaign but already there is noise surrounding his potential departure. If he is to get the boot then Allegri is likely to be among the frontrunners to assume the role - especially as he is out of work.

His time at Juventus recently ended and the Italian, a serial Serie A winner and two-time Champions League finalist, is understood to have the backing of Ferguson, claims Gazzetta dello Sport.

Ten Hag's future is likely to rest on the two games this week, both of which are on the road. On Thursday they head to Porto in the Europa League having drawn their latest European clash with Twente. The Portuguese outfit are among the favourites to win the competition.

Following that they head to Aston Villa - a side who are likely to be their competition for the top four. Should both results go against United then Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co could be left with little choice but to change, despite only handing Ten Hag a new deal in the summer.

Allegri was linked with the Manchester job back when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge and also had an offer from Real Madrid put to him before he chose to have a second stint in charge at Juventus.

Should United go into the managerial market then Thomas Tuchel is also likely to be a leading name they consider. Discussions were held in the summer, just after he had left Bayern Munich, but the two parties opted to go their separate ways. Tuchel has Premier League experience having led Chelsea, which could work in his favour.

He too is a Champions League winner and his no nonsense approach may be seen as a plus as United continue to be less than the sum of their parts. There have also been reports that Inter Milan's Simone Inzaghi, who led the Italian side to the title as well as the European Cup final, is a candidate.
