Mohamed Al Fayed's security chief 'corrupted Jill Dando murder probe'

It comes amid claims Al Fayed also used John Macnamara, an ex-Met Police chief, to bribe police officers and threaten women he had allegedly attacked

Mohamed Al Fayed’s head of security compromised the Jill Dando murder investigation by helping to bribe a bent detective, it is claimed.

John Macnamara is accused of plotting to pay the corrupt police officer in return for confidential information about the BBC Holiday show star’s killing. It comes amid claims Al Fayed also used Macnamara, an ex-Met Police chief, to bribe police officers and threaten women he had allegedly attacked.

Hundreds of women have accused the late Harrods boss of sexually assaulting them in the wake of a BBC documentary last month. The billionaire tycoon was never arrested over the allegations. He died last year aged 94. Jill, 37, was shot at home in South West London in April 1999. Her murder remains unsolved.

Punch magazine, owned by Al Fayed, published previously unknown details from the probe, including that she was shot behind the ear. Punch writer John McVicar claimed in his 2002 Dando book Dead on Time that Macnamara arranged for him to meet a detective who leaked details for £300.

McVicar claimed he was told to put the cash in a brown envelope “in tribute to Mo’ [Al Fayed]” who was accused of bribing Tory MPs in similar fashion. Macnamara is said to have called in favours for his boss from officers he and his team drank with.

McVicar, who died two years ago aged 82, said of Macnamara, who died in 2019: “He has broken far more people’s careers and lives than he has made.” The Met Police declined to comment.
