Man Utd news: Bruno Fernandes statement issued as Jadon Sancho can't resist dig

Manchester United have endured a rotten start to the season after being dismantled by Tottenham on Sunday and speculation surrounding Erik ten Hag's job continues to grow

by · The Mirror

The clouds continue to gather Manchester United after another humbling week for Erik ten Hag.

The Red Devils started the week with a miserable goalless draw with Crystal Palace and followed that up with another stalemate in their Europa League opener vs Twente. Things have grown even worse since then.

United slumped to embarrassing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham on Sunday, with Bruno Fernandes also sent off. It leaves the club in the midst of their joint worst Premier League start ever.

And it sees the pressure rise considerably on under-fire boss Ten Hag. Take a look at all of the headlines from the weekend's defeat here:

Ten Hag quiet on sack

Erik ten Hag refused to answer questions about his job as the pressure rises on the Dutchman. Speaking in his post-match press conference after the defeat against Spurs, the ex-Ajax boss said: "No I am not thinking about this.

"We all made this decision to stay together in summer, as ownership group, leadership group. Also we made the decision, after a clear review, what we have to improve as an organisation and how to construct a squad.

"All decisions made in togetherness, also knowing it would take some time. We are all there on one page, one boat, the ownership, the leadership group, the staff, players too."

Ten Hag was allowed to remain in charge in the summer by Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Sancho fires subtle dig

Jadon Sancho has rubbed salt into United wounds after their defeat to Spurs. The winger took to social media just minutes after the Red Devils' latest reverse.

He reposted a tweet from the Blues' official account. It showed an image of him celebrating with teammate Cole Palmer during Chelsea's 4-2 victory against Brighton. It was also captioned with a blue heart and a smiley emoji.

Sancho has enjoyed a bright start to life since moving to Stamford Bridge. He already has three assists in as many games for Chelsea. He was also denied his first goal for the club after a tight VAR offside call.

Premier League release Fernandes statement

The Premier League have explained exactly why Fernandes was shown a red card against Tottenham. The Portuguese midfielder was sent off after a challenge on James Maddison.

A statement read: "The referee issued a red card to Fernandes for a challenge on Maddison. The VAR checked and confirmed the referee’s call of serious foul play."

According to the FA's rulebook, serious foul play is defined as being: "A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play.

"Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play."
