Liverpool news: Arne Slot rejects genius transfer repeat after double injury blow

Liverpool are back in Champions League action on Wednesday evening as they welcome Italian side Bologna to Anfield and Arne Slot has been speaking ahead of the game

by · The Mirror

Liverpool will be aiming to continue their perfect Champions League start on Wednesday.

The Reds kicked off their latest European campaign last month by beating AC Milan. They now face more Italian opposition at Anfield, with Bologna set to be the visitors to Merseyside.

Arne Slot has already been getting his side prepared for the game following the weekend’s victory against Wolves at Molineux. The Dutchman will certainly be keen for a positive result against Bologna, especially as he is set to make his European debut at Anfield.

While that will be at the forefront of his mind, he will also have one eye on this weekend’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace. Take a look at all of the headlines from the red half of Merseyside:

Slot rejects transfer move

Liverpool boss Slot has rejected the chance to repeat a trick that saw the Reds sign cult hero Joel Matip. The Merseysiders were previously linked with a move for ex-Red Bull Salzburg defender Oumar Solet.

The centre-back was available on a free transfer after seeing his contract terminated by mutual consent last month. And he has now found a new club.

Solet has penned a deal with Italian side Udinese. He could potentially make his debut this weekend with a clash against Lecce ahead of a trip to the San Siro to face AC Milan.

Injury blows confirmed

On the topic of Italian clubs, the Reds have been handed a double injury blow ahead of their showdown with Bologna. Slot has confirmed that forwards Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa have sustained injuries.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the Dutchman said: "Diogo missed two sessions after the game against Wolves. He took a knock.

“I am expecting him to be with us tomorrow. Federico trained with us yesterday. Came today with some problems so not expecting him to be with us. It's a shame for him. I'm not expecting him to be out for very long."

In better news, Darwin Nunez is set to return. The forward has returned to training after missing the weekend’s win against Wolves.

Hasselbaink hails Slot

Ex-Chelsea star Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has hailed Slot for his start at Liverpool, despite claiming it has been somewhat unconventional. He said: “To be honest, I’m not surprised by the start that Arne Slot has overseen because a lot of football people in Holland, people that I know, all told me the same thing, they expected him to be a success.

“He’s not typically Dutch in his style. A lot of Dutch managers can struggle outside of the Netherlands, but people told me that it would be a different story for Slot. I don’t know him personally, but you can see what he’s trying to do after five Premier League games.

“His teams are very good on the press, and they’re very flexible tactically. He isn’t the type of manager that is afraid to make big decisions with his players and the starting eleven.”
