Terrifying moment entire street is submerged as killer floods leave one dead

Deadly floods in an area of Japan have already killed one person and caused seven people to go missing as landslides are affecting rescue missions in the region months on from a deadly earthquake

Footage shows the terrifying moment an entire street is submerged by massive flooding in Japan, which has left one person dead and seven others missing.

The flood has come after an unprecedented amount of rain leading to flooding and landslides in the coastal region of Ishikawa. The BBC reports that the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued its highest "life-threatening" alert level for the northern region of the country with heavy rain expected to last until midday on Sunday. In footage aired on Japanese television by NHK, an entire street can be seen submerged in water.

It is reported that 40,000 people across four cities in the region were forced to evacuate when more than 12 rivers burst their banks. Two of the missing people were carried away in river currents, Japan's public service broadcaster NHK reported. Another four people working on road repairs are also missing following the floods. More than 120mm of rain was recorded in Wajima on Saturday morning according to NHK, proving to be the heaviest downpour in the area since records began.

Sugimoto Satoshi, forecaster for JMA, told reporters: "This level of downpours has never been experienced in this region before. Residents must secure their safety immediately. The risk to their lives is imminent."

Government offical Koji Yamamoto told AFP that 60 people were working to restore a road in the city before being hit by a landslide on Saturday morning. Rescue workers were unable to access the site due to it being blocked by a landslide. Another two people have been reported as seriously injured according to government officials.

6,000 houses have been left without power and an unknown number of properties are without running water, AFP agency has reported. 44,000 people have been told to evacuate from cities Wajimaa and Suzu, and the town of Noto have all ordered 44,000 people to evacuate and seek shelter in Ishikawa prefecture.

Wajima and Suzu were among the areas hit the hardest by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake on New Years Day that killed 236 people. The region is still recovering to this day after the major earthquake caused buildings to fall, roads to crack and a massive blaze. The Japanese region has seen rising rainfall in recent years floods and landslides continue to hit.
