Witnesses have recalled the moment they heard a woman "screaming" six horrific words after a gunman opened fire in a London street and hit a young girl.

Met Police were called to reports of a shooting in Southern Row, Kensington, at around 5.30pm on Sunday. The force confirmed that an eight-year-old girl was seriously injured during the attack.

A 34-year-old man was also rushed to hospital with injuries. A woman, aged 32, was taken to hospital as a precaution, the force said. Shocked neighbours said they heard "four shots" and a woman shouting, “My baby, my baby’s been shot.”

Armed police swarmed the area and attended alongside the London Ambulance Services, who arrived within six minutes of being called.

One local told Metro: “I heard shots, and then a woman shouting: ‘My baby, my baby’s been shot… it makes me sick to think about it now. There were four or five shots, There was screaming. It’s horrible. A neighbour went out with a duvet to cover the injured.”

Father-of-five Ali Hussien, 52, said he "fears" for his children due to crime in the area. The Uber driver said: “I heard four or five bangs. I thought it was fireworks. There were suddenly police everywhere. Now I know it was a shooting. It’s very scary."

A retail worker, 34, described the terrifying sounds from the shooting and said: “I heard ‘boom, boom, boom, boom’. There was a gap between the shots, then I heard a scream. It sounded like from a child.”

Witness Sharon shared the moment she saw the gunman, who is now on the loose. She said: "The guy was shooting directly into a car. I was literally coming out of the exit to my mum’s block of flats and as I was going out, I saw a guy shooting into the car multiple times.

“He was firing directly, like at close range as if you’re standing to open a door, they were shooting directly into it. I was completely in shock and I just ran back up the stairs because I was really scared. Then I looked and I heard screaming afterwards, and then people coming out to call the police."

Superintendent Owen Renowden, in charge of policing for Kensington and Chelsea, issued an appeal for witnesses. He said: “This is an appalling incident that has left two people seriously injured, including a young girl who thankfully is in a stable condition this morning.

“I am appealing to the public who may have been in the area at the time of the shooting. Did you hear any gunshots around 5.30pm yesterday evening? Did you see anyone fleeing from the area? We are keen to hear from anyone who may have any information surrounding this incident. Your information matters, no matter how insignificant you may think it is.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson told The Mirror: "We were called at 5.38pm yesterday (Sunday 24 November) to reports of an incident in Southern Row, W10. The first of our crews arrived in six minutes. Our crews treated two patients at the scene, before taking them to a London major trauma centre as a priority.”
