Florida inmates reveal how they got pregnant behind bars - without meeting in person
Daisy Link and Joan Depaz, two Florida inmates, managed to have a child together while behind bars despite never meeting face-to-face, with the shock pregnancy now explained
by Ewan Gleadow · The MirrorA Florida inmate has revealed how she got pregnant with another inmate despite never meeting face-to-face.
Daisy Link has been behind bars on a second-degree murder charge since 2022, but the 29-year-old mysteriously became pregnant by another inmate. Joan Depaz, 24, is also involved in the shock pregnancy at Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami-Dade County, Florida. Both are behind bars for separate murder charges.
Link has since described the child as "a miracle baby" while Depaz has compared the 29-year-old's pregnancy to "like the Virgin Mary". While the two inmates had been speaking to one another and formed a relationship, they had not met face-to-face.
Link said: "Being in isolation for so long you begin to spend hours and hours talking to this person, you know, to the point where it’s almost as if you’re in the same room with them." Depaz recalled: "I always really wanted to have a baby. And I’m not gonna get to do that for a really long time. So if I had to choose somebody, you know, it would be you."
From there, the pair hatched a plan for a baby that Depaz said would "go down in history". Link was asked how she managed to get pregnant while awaiting trial in prison, to which she replied it was "through the vent". She explained to WSVN: "You would knock on it and you can hear the people from the different floors. You would stand on the toilet actually to be able to talk to them.
For a month the pair plotted the pregnancy, with the vent revealed to have a drop down which meant Link could drop something from her vent into the cell Depaz was in. The 24-year-old would put his semen in Saran wrap "every day like five times a day" for a month.
Link explained: "He would kind of roll it up almost like a cigarette and he would attach it to the line that we had in the vent and I would pull it through." She would then place the semen in "yeast infection applicators" and "administered it". After a few tries, she became pregnant. Dr. Fernando Akerman says that while the chances of becoming pregnant this way are slim, it is possible.
The baby, born on June 19, is now five-months-old and living with Depaz's mother. Link added: "I can’t believe it worked. I think everything happened for a reason. She could be anything. I think that she’s gonna be something great. It’s a real twist it, it is. Everybody says it to me: 'This is like some Lifetime Movie Network.'"
The couple are now being held at separate facilities. Depaz, who faces a first-degree murder charge, is being held at Metrowest Detention Center while Link, who faces a second-degree murder charge, is still at Turner Guilford Knight, records show. They still talk on the phone, WSVN reported, and have video calls with their child.
