Ireland has called for an end to violence on the first anniversary of the October 7 attacks.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheal Martin condemned the attack on Israel carried out by Hamas and other terrorist groups, describing the events as "horror imprinted in our minds".

However, he said it is "not possible to view this anniversary in isolation from the justifiable outrage at the death and destruction suffered by ordinary Palestinians" in Gaza in the past year.

Mr Martin said his thoughts were with the people in Lebanon, where he said the level of death, destruction and displacement is shocking and unacceptable.

The Tánaiste added that the violence must stop and that a political process needs to be put in place urgently.
