Man charged over fatal Limerick hit-and-run
by Cathy Halloran, https://www.facebook.com/rtenews/ · RTE.ieA 30-year-old man has appeared in court facing a number of charges in relation to a fatal hit-and-run on the northside of Limerick city, in which a man in his 50's died.
Daniel Connors, also known as Danny, with an address at the Clondrinagh halting site just outside Limerick city, appeared in court charged with dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving, failing to remain at the scene of a serious road traffic incident, and failing to offer assistance to a seriously inured man, as well as driving without insurance or a drivers licence.
The court heard the accused man made a number of replies under caution when the charges were put to him last night.
The court was told the charges arise from a serious road traffic collison on the Ennis Road in Limerick last Tuesday afternoon, in which a man using the pedestrian crossing was struck and seriously injured by the accused man’s car, which was being driven at excessive speed and which failed to stop at the red light.
The victim was James Forde from nearby Clareview in Limerick, who died from his injuries later that evening at University Hospital Limerick.
Gardaí objected to bail given the seriousness of the charges, and their concerns the accused man would fail to meet any bail conditions set by the court.
Judge John King said he was refusing bail given the very serious nature of the evidence before him and that the threshold for that refusal had been met.
He remanded Daniel Connors in custody to appear by video link at the district court on 3 December next.
