Irish Catholics urged to welcome newcomers to the country

Irish Catholics are being urged to welcome newcomers to the country by being "conscious of the country's history of migration".

In a pastoral letter, the Catholic Bishops' Conference has urged all Christians, and people of goodwill, to embrace the biblical invitation to welcome the stranger; creating parishes and communities of hospitality where people truly belong.

It is the first pastoral letter on the topic of immigration by Catholic bishops. It stated that Ireland's tradition of hospitality - céad míle fáilte - faced challenges due to rising immigration.

It said that as Christians, the belief in the sanctity of life and the commandment to 'love your neighbour' calls for people to care for everyone, regardless of their background.

However, it said, immigration has also exposed longstanding societal issues like housing, homelessness, and gaps in social services which existed before it became "a prominent issue".

The letter pointed out that many immigrants bring "valuable skills and talents, while other seek support for a better future".

The letter which is four pages long and published in the style of a newsletter, offered stories of people who have come to Ireland and have been welcomed into parishes.

It also explained challenges to integration in Ireland and suggested "true Christian encounter", where established communities and newcomers share and learn from each other.

Pope Francis, who has been a vocal advocate for migrants since the beginning of his papacy, is referenced throughout.

The pastoral letter has suggested that parishes get involved in the Community Sponsorship Programme which welcomes refugees through providing hospitality and support.

It concluded by acknowledging the challenge of migration for those seeking safety and a better future, those who welcome them, and governments and communities responsible for providing shelter and support.

Pope Francis is referenced throughout the four-page letter

"While the changes ahead remain uncertain, the teachings of the Gospel provide timeless guidance on addressing these challenges," it said.

The letter titled ‘A Hundred Thousand Welcomes?’ will be distributed in parishes from tomorrow.
