Driver in hospital feared to have life changing injuries after M4 crash near Cardiff

The M4 eastbound carriageway of the motorway near Cardiff was closed for several hours while vehicle recovery and investigations took place

A 47-year-old driver has been taken to hospital with "possibly life-changing injuries" following a collision near Cardiff on Wednesday, October 2. South Wales Police confirmed they were called to the scene of a crash on the M4 eastbound between J32 Coryton and J30 Cardiff Gate during the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The collision involved the drivers of a Mercedes good vehicle, as well as a Toyota MR2. The 47-year-old driver of the Toyota was taken by ambulance to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: "Shortly before 1.00am this morning emergency services were called to a road traffic collision on the eastbound carriageway of the M4 motorway shortly before the off-slip at junction 30.

"The collision involved the drivers of a Mercedes goods vehicle and a Toyota MR2. The 47-year-old driver of the Toyota was taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of Wales with what are described as possibly life-changing injuries. The eastbound carriageway of the motorway was closed for several hours while vehicle recovery and investigations took place."

The M4 was shut for nearly five hours following the collision between J32 Coryton and J30 Cardiff Gate on the M4 eastbound. Motorists were warned that the road was likely to remain closed for some time and to avoid the area. For the latest Cardiff news, sign up to our newsletter here.

It reopened at just after 6.30am on Wednesday. Although all lanes are were reopened, there was slow traffic in the area but it soon returned to normal.

South Wales Police is now appealing for information to help during their investigation. Anyone who witnessed the collision or the manner either vehicle was being driven prior to the crash or who has any dashcam footage of the incident is asked to contact the police force and give reference number 2400327819.
