DVLA issues urgent warning to millions of drivers with 'don't miss out' alert

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued a "don't miss out" alert to millions of UK motorists. The government department, which is responsible for creating and managing driving records, issuing licences, and more, posted a new message on X, formerly known as Twitter, urging UK drivers to "sign up".

The post reads: "Don't miss out on the latest updates from DVLA – sign up to our email alerts today! You can subscribe to a range of topics, from digital services to general news."

This alert follows an earlier update this week, where drivers were informed they must act in any of three circumstances. DVLA provided a list of "acceptable" documents that people can use to prove their registration number if they need to get a new number plate.

This would be necessary if your number plate was lost, damaged or stolen, if you are importing a car to the UK, or if you've purchased a personalised registration number. A registered number plate supplier can be found here, and a list of acceptable documents here.

Anyone found to be driving without a valid number plate, or with one that is broken to the point that its characters are not clearly visible and readable, is likely to be stopped by the police. Gov.uk guidance adds: "You could be fined up to £1,000 and your vehicle will fail its MOT test if you drive with incorrectly displayed number plates."

It's important to ensure you have valid plates on both the front and the back of the vehicle.
